Writing a winning argumentative essay
Argumentative essays are one of the types of essays that students are required to write during their studies. When writing your argumentative essay, you need to select a topic that provides at least two opposing arguments. After choosing such a topic, you conduct research on each of the arguments so that you can make an informed choice on the side you will argue for. Writing an argumentative essay will require you to give supporting evidence for your side. It will also require you to acknowledge opposing arguments.
In writing your argumentative essay, you start with an introduction that needs to include the following:
- Offer a brief overview of your topic
- Identify the two opposing arguments that have been proposed on the topic
- Provide your thesis statement, which, in this case, identifies the side for which you will be arguing.
After writing the introduction of your argumentative essay, the following two paragraphs will be to write your supporting points. For your supporting points, you will have to provide evidence to show that they are based on sound research. When you offer evidence for your supporting points, your argumentative essay has the ingredients to convince the audience to accept your position.
In the subsequent paragraphs of your argumentative essay, you acknowledge the opposing arguments. Here, you will present the points for the opposing argument and evidence in support of those points. After providing these points, you will need to refute them so that you can reinforce your argument.
Refuting the opposing arguments provides leeway for you to write a strong conclusion to your argumentative essay. In the conclusion, you start by restating your thesis and then give the main points discussed in your argumentative essay. After giving the main points, you end your argumentative statement with a statement to indicate the take-away message for your reader. When you follow these steps, you will be on your way to writing an excellent argumentative essay.
